Tasmanian teenager and new North Melbourne player Geordie Payne was crowned the No.1 pick of the mid-season draft as one of 19 young men who found AFL homes on Wednesday night.
Tasmanian Geordie Payne’s red-hot form in the opening months of the season after missing out in last year’s draft has belatedly earned him his shot as the No.1 pick in this year’s AFL mid-season draft.
Richmond added to their key defensive depth with Peel Thunder interceptor Jacob Blight at the No.2 pick. McLachlan, who has kicked 26 goals in six matches this year, described the moment as “surreal” and is already looking forward to getting started.“I’m keen to get into it, and it’s something that’s been on my mind over the last few months and definitely ready to relocate,” McLachlan said.Toby Murray, a 200-centimetre ruck-forward, joined his brother Nick at Adelaide with the No.7 selection. A third Murray brother, Sam, was on Sydney’s list and played 13 games for Collingwood.
Will Snelling, Sam Durham, Massimo D’Ambrosio and Jye Menzie all delivered varying value for the Bombers as mid-season picks, but injury has prevented last year’s selection, Jaiden Hunter, from making his mark. North Melbourne’s head of recruiting and retention Will Thursfield said: “He is a footballer and he has a real will to compete. He shows something different with his ability to compete in the air and very dangerous at ground level.
Richmond national recruiting manager Chris Toce said: “He is a great story of persistence – he’s just progressively improved. It’s a credit to him. He presents like a pro. He is a big, strong lad and he’s got terrific endurance and strength. Physically, he could play AFL real soon but there is no pressure on him to do that. We want him to come in and play some good VFL footy to begin with and if his form dictates that he could progress to the AFL level, that would be fantastic.
McLachlan said he would do his all to earn his call-up to the senior side. “It would be pretty incredible to get an opportunity with those boys, but I will just take it step-by-step,” he said.Adelaide have picked Toby Murray from their own SANFL side. Murray can play as both a ruckman and key forward.
“He’s put on some size and strength while working on a farm full-time which shows a great attitude and appetite for hard work.“He played strong footy against men for Wangaratta Rovers last year and we think as a 20-year-old 200cm player he’s got plenty of scope and time to improve. “He was a little unlucky not to get drafted at the end of last year, but he’s used that to elevate his game even further, showing some really promising form for North Melbourne in the VFL.
