The 35-year-old from Penang, despite having to deal with an upset tummy in the morning, managed to stay cool under the pressure to reclaim the SEA Games men’s singles snooker title he last won in Singapore in 2015.
He overcame wily Thai Akani Songsermsawad 4-1 in the final to ensure the Malaysian snooker team met their two-gold target in Phnom Penh. The tense victory came as a welcome relief for the entire Malaysian contingent who had no golden glitter to show since Saturday. Earlier, Chuan Leong had bounced back from a two-frame blemish to overcome Cambodia’s Sophanith Men 4-2.The losing semi-finalists each received a bronze medal.“I’m so pleased to win this gold medal as I only entered for one event this time. I didn’t play in the doubles, so it feels good to get back the singles crown I won many years ago,” said Chuan Leong.“I am also happy to contribute to Malaysia as we did not have any gold medal to show since yesterday.
“In fact, I was feeling not good since early morning as my stomach was giving me problem. But I felt better after taking medicine and managed to clear my semi-final hurdle,” said Chuan Leong, who started his SEA Games career in 2007 in Thailand where he won the team silver.
