BAGUIO CITY – Seventeen European Union ambassadors and chargés d'affaires embarked on a three-day visit to Baguio City from January 27th to 29th, aiming to strengthen diplomatic ties and gain firsthand insights into the city's acclaimed governance practices and commitment to environmental sustainability.
The delegation, representing Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, and Sweden, engaged in a series of meetings and site visits. Their itinerary included discussions with Mayor Benjamin Magalong and other city officials, a tour of the city's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and an in-depth exploration of the Green LGUs (Local Government Units) project. This initiative, receiving significant funding from the EU, is a cornerstone of Baguio City's sustainability efforts and a key area of collaboration between the city and the European bloc.EU Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro expressed his gratitude for the warm reception extended to the delegation by Baguio City officials and residents. Ambassador Santoro emphasized the significance of the visit, highlighting Baguio's distinguished reputation for good governance, digitalization, environmental consciousness, academic excellence, and a vibrant civil society. He underscored the crucial role of the P3.6-billion Green LGUs project in supporting the Philippines' transition towards a greener future. In a media interview, Ambassador Santoro announced plans to allocate an additional P28 billion through the Team Europe approach, which aligns with the EU's Global Gateway Strategy.
