The Esquimalt Fire Department is marking its 20th anniversary after it formed its own department in 2003 to serve the community.
Esquimalt firefighters were joined by Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins, members of council, MLA Mitzi Dean, and Victoria's Chief Dan Atkinson to celebrate its 20th anniversary and unveil its new crest.was formed. Now the department is marking its 20th anniversary.On New Year’s Day, the milestone anniversary was marked by unveiling a new crest for the department.
Esquimalt Fire Rescue Services’ new crest features a ladder and hydrant set on a Florian Cross, the Township of Esquimalt coat-of-arms and a wave pattern in the foreground to symbolize the “place of shoaling waters” from which Esquimalt has its name. The word “Nɘtsɘmat” is Lekwungen for “we are one”.
“Our values include innovation, inclusion and respect,” said Fire Chief Steve Serbic. “I’m proud to present an updated crest that commemorates this 20-year milestone in the department and that embodies our values.” Esquimalt’s fire department has 24 members, and two assistant fire chiefs. The crews are trained in structural collapse, first responder certification, confined space and high angle rope rescue, as well as fire suppression and prevention.
The department also supports local initiatives through the Esquimalt Firefighters Charitable Foundation. Initiatives include the Mustard Seed Foundation, the Esquimalt Curling Club, the Rainbow Kitchen, Lions Baseball, various Esquimalt High programs and Esquimalt Neighborhood House Society.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.
