Facing criticism for delays in rate resets for Meralco and NGCP, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) assures lawmakers it aims to complete the proceedings within the next few months. During a legislative inquiry, lawmakers questioned former ERC Commissioner Alfredo Non about the lack of rate reset proceedings during his tenure, leading to lapsed regulatory periods. ERC Chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta stated that the ERC en banc has begun deliberations on NGCP's fourth regulatory period rate reset and expects to finalize it by February. The Meralco rate reset is projected to be completed by June.
UNDER fire from lawmakers for the delays in the rate reset s for the Manila Electric Company and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines , the Energy Regulatory Commission said it is eyeing to finish the rate reset in the upcoming months.
Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez emphasized that the ERC, not NGCP or Meralco, should be held accountable for the lack of a rate reset, as both companies are regulated entities bound by the commission’s rules. Rodriguez also lamented the undue criticism directed at Meralco, noting that despite the ERC’s failure to conduct a timely rate reset, the utility still complied with the regulator’s order to refund approximately P48 billion to customers for the lapsed period.
He said that no rate reset was conducted for either NGCP or Meralco throughout his seven-year tenure at the ERC, attributing it to an error that occurred before he joined the commission.
