The University of Sydney’s Joanne Wright says a levy on international student fee income would be “a distraction” from the lack of proper research funding.University of Sydney deputy-vice chancellor, education, Joanne Wright, told The Australian Financial Review Higher Education Summit that the proposed tax was “at best a distraction and at worst an exacerbation of the real problem, which is the lack of proper research funding”.

Victoria University vice-chancellor and president Adam Shoemaker described the proposed tax as “abhorrent”. “We’re just at the beginning of this,” he said. “It’s time to have the real debate now and not to fall into this trap.”QUT chancellor and business leader Ann Sherry said charging a tax on international student fee revenue was “too simplistic”. “I think we’ve fallen into the trap of just putting foreign student fees into that bucket, as opposed to having proper sources of research funding,” she said. “I think that’s a really important issue for us.
