Environmental Groups Demand Release of Manila Bay Reclamation Impact Study

Environmental, climate, and fisherfolk groups in the Philippines are calling on the DENR to release the results of a study assessing the cumulative impact of reclamation projects on Manila Bay. The groups argue that the transparency of scientific findings is crucial for understanding the potential risks these projects pose to marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and the broader socio-economic landscape.

As early as 2023, the DENR has been conducting an assessment of the impact of reclamations on Manila Bay . 2024 is ending, and results are yet to be publicized. Environmental, climate, and fisherfolk groups are urging the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR ) to release the results of the cumulative assessment of the impact of reclamation projects on Manila Bay .

“Given the critical ecological, socio-economic, and cultural significance of the bay, and the irreversible damage that these projects pose to our fisheries and marine habitats and the livelihoods of our artisanal fisherfolk and coastal residents, among other impacts, the transparency and availability of scientific studies on its current and future state are of utmost importance,” the groups’ letter to the DENR, dated December 24, read. The groups include Oceana Philippines, Wetlands International Philippines, Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Mangingisda-Pilipinas, Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), and the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice, among others. In their letter, the groups said they are aware that the DENR commissioned the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) to do the study. “The findings from this study are crucial in understanding the potential risks these projects pose to marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and the broader socio-economic landscape and the needed action to respond to these risks and serious threats,” the groups said.
