Melbourne’s air is buzzing with dragonflies after a series wet summers have created excellent conditions for the colourful insects.

They carve through the air like helicopters, with two sets of wings moving independently as they hunt for other bugs to eat.

The reason for this is many larger dragonfly species spend at least a year in freshwater as larvae before they emerge as adults and start flying around, he said.Dragonflies are strong, agile flyers and can travel long distances on the wind.
