Australian cricket’s most iconic events - the Boxing Day Test and New Year’s Test - are up for grabs, with Cricket Australia refusing to lock in Melbourne and Sydney as host venues beyond this season.

This masthead can reveal the Melbourne Cricket Club, the Victorian government and Cricket Australia are locked in negotiations for a new venue hire agreement to keep the Boxing Day Test at its spiritual home, the latest three-season deal having expired last summer.

“We are really fortunate that we have a really good runway to look at our future content now. We can work with our venues and our governments and our state associations to plan thoroughly ahead. Usman Khawaja said he was a traditionalist when it came to the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests in Melbourne and Sydney and believes they should remain in place. “I am fully supportive of Ash and her stance, as is the team. We understand it is a very sensitive issue for a lot of people. As a group, the Australian women’s team, we are undertaking a lot of education around Indigenous culture and trying to learn as much as we can … will leave the scheduling to those who make the decisions,” she said.

“I’m big on that in Australian cricket, to First Nations people to immigrants like myself who have come to Australia.
