No end in sight yet to the suffering of motorists and commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, MAUREEN IHUA-MADUENYI and OLADIMEJI RAMON report Since the ongoing reconstruction work on the Lagos-Iba

dan Expressway began at the Ojodu-Berger end of the road, it has been an endless tale of frustration and anguish for motorists and commuters plying the road every day.

Investigation by our correspondents shows that these criminals, who operate under the cover of darkness, have taken advantage of the situation on the expressway to rob motorists and commuters of their belongings. To beat the endless heavy traffic at the Lagos end of the road, the average commercial motorcyclist has no choice other than to ride against the out-bound traffic, thereby putting his own life and that of his passenger at risk.

However, investigation also showed that commercial motorcyclists operating between Ibafo and Ojodu-Berger had been benefitting from the unpleasant traffic situation on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The gridlock has a far-reaching effect on the lives of many Nigerians. Most people have resorted to different ways of surviving the worsening traffic situation on the road. Evenhave become regular companions of many road users, just as several traffic monitoring groups committed to providing regular updates for use of residents of Lagos and neighbouring Ogun States appear to have sprung up online.

“I had to look for a school within Magboro to enroll my daughter. When I close from work at 6pm, I go to pick her up from school and we go home together,” Adigbo said. The ongoing reconstruction work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway began in 2013 under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. It was expected to be completed in 2017.

A former Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Lagos Chapter, Mr Olatunde Jaiyesimi, said the only way the Federal Government could put an end to the pain suffered by motorists and commuters by providing alternative routes. He said the only way for motorists to reduce the hours spent on the road would be to cooperate with the contractor and security agencies by keeping to their lanes. The Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Clement Oladele, said that failure on the part of road users to do the right thing was due to indiscipline.
