The Canadian women’s national team wrapped up the three\u002Dgame SheBelieves Cup tournament with an uninspiring 3\u002D0 loss to Japan

“I think for us, it was a bad day at the office,” Canada head coach Bev Priestman said. “I think it probably reflects this tour. I think it shows where the group were at — emotionally and physically exhausted.

Canada started the game against Japan well, with midfielder Cloe Lacasse coming close to scoring in the 15th minute on a long run down the left wing. Lacasse was able to get a left-footed shot through a defender, but the ball rolled just wide. Kobayashi clattered into D’Angelo after sliding to take her shot, injuring the Canadian goalkeeper in the process. D’Angelo had to be taken out of the game and was replaced by Kailen Sheridan in the 30th minute.

It wasn’t long before Sheridan was called into action, having to face a Japan penalty kick after fullback Jun Endo slipped past Canadian centre back Kadeisha Buchanan at the edge of the penalty area and then was taken down in it. “There has obviously been a lot of clutter and with that brings a whole different dynamic to a camp, you can’t hide from that,” Priestman said. “The other thing as a coach, going into a World Cup with very few games left, you choose to see players and change partnerships across three games and what you get with that, without proper training time, is that they don’t develop partnerships and that’s what you saw out there.
