Emergency legislation capping the price of coal to curb soaring electricity prices has been rushed through NSW parliament in an extraordinary sitting after MPs were dragged back to Macquarie Street four days from Christmas

“The conflict in Ukraine and the results of trade sanctions imposed on Russian coal and gas have destroyed the global market by limiting supply while demand remains high. This is causing extreme and unusual increases in energy bills,” he told parliament. “This is billions of dollars going into transmission that will set up our energy future here in our state, and what the prime minister and energy minister are doing in other states as well, will bring them on the journey,” he said on Wednesday.
