LONDON — Elon Musk , after dedicating his resources to Donald Trump's re-election campaign, has turned his attention to Europe , raising concerns among politicians across the continent. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has publicly supported the far-right Alternative for Germany, called for the release of imprisoned U.K. anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson, and labeled British Prime Minister Keir Starmer an evil tyrant who deserves imprisonment.
Musk's social media platform, X, is filled with abusive language directed at politicians, including terms like 'stupid cretin' and 'sniveling cowards,' as well as retweets from far-right and anti-immigrant accounts. Andrew Chadwick, a professor of political communication at Loughborough University, observes that Musk is employing X akin to an old-fashioned newspaper magnate to advance his political views. He notes that Musk increasingly aligns himself with a global far-right movement, actively promoting right-wing influencers with substantial followings on his platform as justification for his involvement in European politics. Musk has directly engaged in German politics, which is facing a February 23rd election following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition government. On December 20th, Musk stated on X, 'Only the AfD can save Germany,' referring to the Alternative for Germany party, which is under scrutiny by domestic intelligence agencies for suspected extremism. He further reiterated his support for the AfD in an article for the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, claiming that Germany is on the brink of economic and cultural collapse.
