Hours after losing her partner, Ellidy had to make an urgent decision on a topic she knew nothing about: Posthumous sperm retrieval.

abc.net.au/news/chumpy-pullins-partner-ellidy-has-baby-through-sperm-retrieval/101532234A sunny morning on Queensland's Gold Coast. The ocean smooth as glass. Chumpy Pullin is at home with his partner, Ellidy. So the champion athlete slips on wetsuit and weight-belt, and confidently wades into the Pacific Ocean.Later that morning, while Chumpy is out diving, Ellidy feels an unusual pain in her chest. Like her heart breaking into pieces, she'll later say.

Minnie Alex Pullin, born in October 2021, had been conceived through IVF treatment, using sperm that had been surgically retrieved from Chumpy's body hours after he'd died. In the days that followed Alex "Chumpy" Pullin's death, tributes flowed for one of Australia's most recognisable winter athletes.

"Our life was just going on this trajectory where we had the house, had the dog, and had the the grand plans.Chumpy and Ellidy had recently got a dog, Rummi. That afternoon, she was sitting on the back deck, her head buried in her knees, feeling what would become a very familiar mix of emotions in the months ahead: loss and grief and disbelief.Friends and family were saying sperm retrieval was an option. But within hours it would be too late. Ellidy had to decide. The way that my brother asked me was quite urgent from memory, and I think I just said, 'Yes, whatever. I don't even know what you're talking about.

Six months later, Ellidy tried IVF treatment. The second round worked and, nine months later, Minnie was born healthy and strong.
