The transition to electric two- and three-wheelers is crucial to reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Africa and Asia. These vehicles make up the largest percentage of the vehicle fleet in many cities, and their electrification represents a significant opportunity to improve air quality and combat climate change. As per UNEP data, Asia has 490 million two- and three-wheelers, while Africa has 27 million, with over 90 percent running on petrol.
UNEP and the International Climate Initiative have been supporting governments and rolling out pilot projects to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles. The need for change is urgent, with Asia adding 60 million two- and three-wheelers to its roads annually. Several countries are making progress. Vietnam has over 3 million electric two-wheelers, while Thailand aims for 30 percent of vehicles to be electric by 2030. Indonesia is focused on national policies to accelerate the transition, and in the Philippines, municipalities like Pasig City are integrating electric two- and three-wheelers into city services.
