Eight people have died including six Chinese nationals after a cargo ship sank off the coast of Japan according to Chinese state media.

Chinese officials say the Hong Kong-registered cargo ship sent out a distress signal Thursday evening, 110 kilometres west of the remote and uninhabited Danjo Islands in far southwestern Japan.

Japanese authorities have yet to confirm the death toll provided by the Chinese Consul General but told news agencies five people had been rescued with non-life threatening conditions.
