Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky's career retrospective in London highlights the urgency to address environmental damage caused by human activities. However, some environmental campaigners argue that more action is needed to raise awareness and inspire change.
Canada's Edward Burtynsky says a new career retrospective in London , England, reflects his urgency to show the world how we've despoiled the planet. But some environmental campaigners say it's not enough to move people to action. This photograph, taken by Edward Burtynsky in 2018, showcases a tailings pond at the Wesselton Diamond Mine in Kimberley, South Africa, nicknamed 'Diamond City.
' The conveyor belt featured in the centre is guiding the kimberlite tailings (waste material from diamond mining) into a waste pond. Passersby from a photography group remark that it looks like the work of 19th-century Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. But it's not a Klimt. In fact, it's not even a painting. It's an aerial photograph of salt ponds in Senegal, captured in 2019 by Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsk
