The future of the EDSA bus carousel in Quezon City remains uncertain after conflicting statements from government officials. While officials initially suggested plans to scrap the bus system, the MMDA clarified that it will remain operational. However, concerns have been raised about the feasibility of the proposed plan and the impact on pedestrians, public transportation users, and cyclists.
Earlier this week, a discussion sparked concerning the future of the EDSA bus carousel in Quezon City. While MMDA Chairperson Don Artes and DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla suggested plans to scrap the bus system once the MRT-3 could accommodate the current passenger load, MMDA General Manager Jojo Bautista clarified that the EDSA busway is not being removed. Bautista stated that while discussions took place, the busway remains operational.
However, both Artes and Remulla proposed a plan to phase out the EDSA bus carousel in favor of an improved MRT-3, aiming to alleviate notorious traffic congestion on the country's busiest thoroughfare. This suggestion has drawn criticism from the Move as One Coalition and 22 civil organizations, who urged national agencies to prioritize pedestrians, public transportation users, and cyclists over other road users. The coalition highlighted that a significant portion of the population relies on walking or cycling for transportation to work, school, and essential services.Bautista, meanwhile, announced that even point-to-point buses and airport express buses are now permitted to utilize the EDSA Busway to help reduce congestion. He also revealed that a feasibility study on the EDSA busway project's privatization is underway and is expected to be completed within a few months. Bautista expressed the hope that the EDSA Busway will adhere to international standards to ensure passenger comfort and convenience
