SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 4, 2023 | SaltWireWith the best player in the league right now, along with the next-best thing, you’d think it might take a lot to impress Jay Woodcroft these days.
“I think there’s been numerous things, including the work that all of our players are putting in,” Woodcroft said. “The work rate this year has been quite impressive and I’m just going to say, matter-of-fact, what we expect. “I think training camp is realistically about building up your base, or laying a foundation,” Woodcroft said. “But most importantly, it’s about more than reps, or how many exhibition games or what your numbers are in pre-season. I think, for the core of our team, it’s about thinking well. I want our players thinking properly, having the right mindset heading into a regular season.
“I think it derives from our leadership group. Specifically our captain, who sets the tone, has an intolerance for anything that gets in the way of winning,” Woodcroft said of Connor McDavid, who is coming off a career-best 153 points in his eighth NHL season. “And for him and the entire leadership group, there is a level of seriousness about starting the season the right way.
