Tuesday’s announcement that Toronto-area billionaire Michael Andlauer has reached an agreement in principle to buy our NHL team is good for the city in countless ways.
• Second, local partners. Part of Melnyk’s challenge was that he wasn’t Ottawa-based and didn’t understand the sports or government ecosystem of this town . Whether Andlauer moves here or not — some reports suggest he might – having Jeff York, former CEO of the Farm Boy grocery chain, and Neil and Shawn Malholtra of Claridge Homes, will keep communications with both fans and government properly grounded.
• Third, deep ties with the NHL already. Andlauer owns 10 per cent of the Montreal Canadiens, which he’ll now sell. He’s also an alternate NHL governor. He owns the Brantford Bulldogs junior hockey team.
