We hope Wake will take up Stiles’ request and launch a full examination of the circumstances around both events to determine whether ethical lines were crossed. As we learn more about the events, such an examination is warranted. When his daughter was married the following month, provincial appointees, a lobbyist and prominent developers were among the guests,. One guest was appointed to sit on a provincial agency two months after sharing a table with the premier. Another guest was a lobbyist who is now working for a developer pushing the province to redesignate Greenbelt land to build homes.
Ford has voiced frustration that the family events are even in the spotlight, suggesting he’s being held to some standard that doesn’t apply to other politicians.Despite Ford’s protestations, the attendance of business leaders who benefit from government decisions schmoozing at family events raises the appearance of a conflict of interest. It’s troubling that Ford doesn’t seem sensitive to this.
