The Editorial Board writes: 'Red-light cameras are supposed to snag traffic scofflaws. For the last few years, they’ve done a much better job giving a green light to corruption.'

revoke the Illinois Department of Transportation’s approval of a red-light camera system if it’s tied to civil or criminal corruption charges involving a state lawmaker, a state official with oversight over red-light cameras, or a local government official with voting power over the camera system. The legislation also would give motorists the ability to challenge a red-light camera ticket if that camera was cited in corruption proceedings.

Support for Mazzochi’s bill from the General Assembly would seem to be a no-brainer. It’s not an outright ban on red-light cameras — it simply calls for their shutdown if they’re linked to corruption charges such as the allegations that snagged Ragucci, Sandoval, Presta and O’Sullivan. Why would state lawmakers want to keep in operation red-light cameras that only serve as cash registers for greedy politicians? And, as a golden rule that applies to all such transactions in all sectors, Illinois communities should only be doing business with companies that clean up any rogue operators dangling kickbacks or commissions.
