Mount Pearl’s Zach Dean is the ninth Newfoundlander to dress for Canada at the world junior hockey championships. - HOCKEY CANADA - ContributedCheers: To workers who can manage to contend with Boxing Day crowds. As per usual, major retailers in St. John's metro were busy this past week after the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays, with shoppers out in full force to snap up deals.

Jeers: To shoppers out for Boxing Day sales. This is a bit of a flipside take in comparison to the last one. We know there's all sorts of talk about the need to support the economy and help businesses, but given how heavily consumerist the holiday season is in general — the lead up to Christmas is all about filling space under the trees to most folks it would seem — one has to wonder whether it's truly necessary for shoppers to be out there like they are for holiday sales.

Jeers: To the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship. These players aren't even paid for participating, yet they're part of an event that's bringing in dollars hand-over-fist for the IIHF , especially when Canada is the host nation. Does that seem fair? These kids could use some bucks. And while it might be entertaining at times, the excitement people express over Canada throttling a considerably less-talented German team by a score of 11-2 or shutting out Austria 11-0 seems a bit rich.
