StarEditorial: Decriminalization is the first step toward reframing problematic drug use as a matter for public health rather than the criminal law.

Critics of decriminalizing drugs are quick to tell us that decriminalization won’t solve Canada’s drug problem. And you know what? They’re right. In fact, there's a lot that decriminalization won't do.

— the first, though certainly not the last, step toward reframing problematic drug use as a matter for public health rather than the criminal law.. That's why both jurisdictions applied for a legal exemption to decriminalize possession of small amounts of some illicit drugs. Since this has never been tried before , it's fair to say we don’t know what the effects will be. Given this lack of evidence, debates about the value of decriminalization have taken place in an empirical vacuum. This is precisely why we need to try decriminalization and study its effects, ideally in more than one location.but every province is unique. What happens in B.C. might stay in B.C., or it might happen elsewhere, too.

To accomplish that, we need to do something, not cease doing something. Decriminalization is currently receiving the lion's share of attention because it’s new and unknown. But we must not allow the spotlight to divert our attention from what we must do.
