All of B.C.’s 188 municipalities and regional districts will be eligible to tap into the $1-billion growing communities fund which they can use to build new infrastructure and amenities such as recreation facilities, transit services, parks and water treatment plants.Eby has promised to set housing targets for municipalities through the Housing Supply Act.

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said last week the eight to 10 pilot communities for the housing targets will be selected this spring. The province is sitting on a $5.7 billion surplus plus billions more in unallocated cash which Eby has said the province will use before the end of the fiscal year to support British Columbians. According to B.C. law, any surplus not used before March 31 must be used to pay down the provincial debt.

These grants will complement existing infrastructure funding and will be distributed by the end of March. Our in-depth journalism is possible thanks to the support of our subscribers.
