“We were both early risers and so we often talked by phone very early in the morning,” explained Bajus, now 75. “He was very charismatic and very joyful. He could tease anybody.”
“If you became a friend of Michael’s, you stayed a friend for life,” said Forest. “He had a ‘let’s make it happen’ personality. He made the effort: Effort was in his DNA. He stayed in touch with absolutely everybody.” When he retired, Baine started a second career as a consultant and volunteer. He helped introduce substance abuse prevention and treatment programs at local high schools, and improved the availability of mental health services. He served on CHEO’s board of directors, as chair of the Youth Services Bureau and as a volunteer with The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.A lifelong marathon runner, Baine took part in almost every race weekend since 1978.
