GEORGE TOWN: The scorching heat and haze blanketing Penang was dampened by brief morning showers on Tuesday (April 18).

The short bout of rain in the wee hours of Tuesday morning increased air quality in the state after air pollutant index readings were on an upward trajectory over the past two days.

On Monday , the air quality in Penang plummeted as the air pollutant index at one meteorological station showed that the API was at an unhealthy level of 145. According to the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre website, no hotspots indicating substantial open burning are happening in Malaysia and only a single hotspot has detected on Sumatra island.
