“What they developed was a program called “Out of the Blue,” because so many of these assaults were unpredictable,” he said. “In Calgary, any assault on a transit operator or staff is now known as a ‘Code Blue.’” “They can end up where they’re just not fit to drive safety sensitive equipment,” he said. “And so they’ll take themselves off for the remainder of the shift or for whatever period of time it takes to deal with the trauma.”
“If you’ve ever been spit on, you don’t stop and analyze the event,” said Mahar. “Unfortunately, as a human you have an instant reaction, right?”Postmedia reached out to the City of Calgary for this story but did not receive a response.
