Peter Dutton has warned against writing off the Liberal Party as he pledged to revitalise its political fortunes.

Delivering the annual Downer Oration in Adelaide on Tuesday night, the opposition leader also said ongoing unity was an essential ingredient if the party wasHe said the current predicament was better than in 2007, when Labor was in power federally and in every state and territory, because unlike back then, “we have unity and maturity as a party at the federal level”.

Mr Dutton said the party’s fortunes did not rest on following Labor on policies such as climate change and the Voice to parliament, as some commentators and critics were recommending.“They argue if only the Liberal Party could be more like the Labor Party, they would be able to vote for us for the first time,” he said.“I am determined to demonstrate to Australians that prosperity and progress come not from the radicalism Labor is peddling.

“Many in the media want us to announce our policies today. I only wish they had held the Albanese opposition to the same standard,” he said.He also said the party needed to squash factionalism and fix its preselection methods by getting good local candidates into the field, early.
