The Opposition Leader has denounced several inner-city councils for choosing to “grandstand” on Australia Day by not holding a citizenship ceremony on the public holiday.
The City of Sydney is among several inner-city councils across the country which have moved the annual Australia Day citizenship ceremony away from January 26.

Under the new edict, citizenship ceremonies can take place on the three days either side of the public holiday.

P&O Cruises overturn Australia Day ban following community backlashP&O Cruises have overturned an Australia Day ban following community backlash. The cruise ship operator sent an internal memo to staff last week prohibiting the use of the flag or playing of the national anthem as well as banning any Australia Day paraphernalia. Company President Marguerite Fitzgerald says the company implemented the ban to ensure everyone 'felt included' on the day. Two ships are expected to dock in Sydney on Thursday to partake in Australia Day festivities.

The Andrews government will instead mark the day with an event at Federation Square aimed at reflecting, respecting and celebrating.
