Durham Region Transit is receiving $12.1-million in federal funds to support the fleet’s first electric buses.
The money comes in through the Canada Community-Building Fund, previously known as the ‘Gas Tax Fund.’ Durham Region will be borrowing up to $62-million from the feds over the next four years to buy up to 98 more electric buses. The loan is being described as “low-interest financing.” Officials say they will be spending less on maintenance and diesel in the long run, and intend to put those savings toward paying off the loan.
