Acclaimed actor Sir Michael Gambon, rose to prominence in the theatre before starring roles in The Singing Detective and the Harry Potter films, has died aged 82, British media report.
The Singing DetectiveLady Gambon and son Fergus were said to be "devastated" by the Dumbledore actor's death.
"Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82," a statement issued by publicist Clair Dobbs said."We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love."
No matter what role he took on in a career that lasted more than five decades, Gambon was always instantly recognisable by the deep and drawling tones of his voice. He was cast as the much-loved Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore after the death of his predecessor, Richard Harris, in 2002.
