THE Department of Agriculture and the Department of Trade and Industry will ink a memorandum of understanding to fast-track efforts in tackling persistently high retail rice prices.
For her part, DTI Secretary Cristina Roque, who also chairs the National Price Coordinating Council , said she would soon convene the interagency council to review strategies aimed at taming food prices and ensuring fairness in the market. The DA is also part of the council. Laurel recently told the BusinessMirror that the DA is mulling over the imposition of an MSRP on imported rice ranging from P42 to P55 per kilo.
The DA earlier said it is considering declaring a national food security emergency, which would grant the agriculture chief the authority to release rice stocks held in reserve by the National Food Authority , noting that this would help increase supply and bring down retail prices.
