The Brisbane River is set to take centre stage this month as organisers of two of the three biggest sporting events on the planet ramp up preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2032 Olympic Games.
During the World Cup, to be held this month and next across Australia and New Zealand, a Fan Festival featuring a big screen, bars and food outlets will be activated at South Bank, from the Piazza to the Brisbane River.
“Fans will be able to sit and watch all 64 games on a big screen right here on the banks of the Brisbane River, with our soaring city skyline as an absolutely stunning backdrop,” he said. Featuring 500 drones, the 150-metre Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos will fly high above the Brisbane River. In Latin, “agito” means “I move”.
