A shortage of bus drivers caused 178 services to be cancelled statewide on Friday amid 205 disruptions, in a major local spike of an emerging nationwide problem.

Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said Friday’s spike showed the problem was getting worse.

In 2022, the pandemic caused driver shortages, Dow said, adding the situation had deteriorated since schools returned in January.“On Friday, when there were 205 services disrupted, the Gold Coast and Brisbane seemed particularly badly hit. It means that where the services are cancelled, those buses just don’t turn up.”

“Over the years, they have steadily casualised their workforce; they now have about 500 casuals on their books,” Brown said.“How many of those 500 [casuals] are available on a daily basis would be anybody’s guess.”Shifts can be scheduled 24/7 and drivers rostered for “split shifts”, with a long break between two shifts on the same day.
