The St George Illawarra Dragons' board have reportedly endorsed a former NRL premiership winning coach to lead their team into the future, ending weeks of speculation.

The club's board reportedly met on Tuesday morning to vote on their preferred candidate for the role and a unanimous vote for Flanagan was returned, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Flanagan, Ben Hornby and Dean Young were the leading candidates for the position but the board decided to go with the experience the former Cronulla Sharks coach offered. Flanagan was seen as the most likely candidate after Roosters assistant Jason Ryles announced he would be rejoining the Melbourne Storm next year.
