The maiden international Women’s Big Bash League draft on Sunday will help deliver full-time cricketing careers, says Australian allrounder Ash Gardner.
Australian cricket great Ash Gardner says the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League international draft is a “game changer”, as dual-sports star Jess Duffin returns to cricket three months after having her second baby.
Duffin, who has played footy for Collingwood, North Melbourne and the Hawks, retired from AFLW last year after playing nearly an entire season while pregnant with her second baby.“I’ve been able to juggle both sports at different stages of my career, but with the seasons overlapping last year, it wasn’t possible to commit to both,” said Duffin, whose son Archie is three months old.
“Looking at the platinum picks, there are some fantastic players there, even girls that have nominated as bronze are worthy of being picked up as well. “Of course, I would love for it to be more equal, but I feel like I have to be realistic in what is achievable. I certainly think there is room to go and there is still more money that can be put into the women’s game, but we also have to respect what the men do and the revenue they bring into the game,” Gardner said.“I think naturally we will bring in some revenue, too, when we have the best players in the world playing.
