Dozens of migrants making the treacherous several-day journey from Turkey to Italy have perished after their overcrowded boat smashed into rocky reefs and sunk.
The ship was trying to land near the coastal town of Crotone in the Calabria region when it hit rocky reefs and broke apart.

Picture: AP Photo/Giuseppe PipitaThe ship had departed from Izmir in eastern Turkey three or four days ago and had been carrying about 150 migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her sadness at the tragedy, and vowed to “continue” preventing migrants from making the journey.
