SFU ethicist Mark Wexler said the aggressive proliferation of opinions on social media is increasingly dividing well-meaning people.
They include the “tough love” ideal of encouraging people to help themselves, giving individuals freedom to make their own choices about living on sidewalks or taking dangerous drugs, distributing the DTES population to other neighbourhoods, or championing innovative solutions like safe supply and redesigned housing units.Article content
It’s leading to even more fragmentation of viewpoints on the DTES, many inspired by a commitment to “social justice,” said Wexler. Non-profits, governments, pundits, activists and residents engage in endless ideological wars about the most moral way to help one’s neighbour.
