Douglas Todd: Neighbourhood advocates fear a tower on concrete highrises is about to be proposed instead of lower\u002Dlevel densification.

But they’re concerned by the implications of some of the information so far released by MST Development and the City of Vancouver. They’re aware the developer is proposing dozens of towers, including highrises of more than 38 storeys.

“We hope the Jericho Lands will be affordable for people who live and work here,” said Larry Benge, a residential designer and former co-chair of the Coalition of Vancouver Neighbourhoods, stating the coalition’s opposition to the construction of too many luxury properties, like at the massive Oakridge Park development, which they fear will be marketed mainly to investors, foreign and domestic.

Members of the Jericho Coalition say they’ve attended numerous meetings with MST executives and city staff, but each event has been tightly controlled. There has been almost no dialogue, they say, between concerned residents and those deciding what will happen to the former public lands, which Ottawa and Victoria transferred to the three First Nations in 2014. The federal government maintains a minority ownership.
