Columnist says 'GRRR LIVE!' is quite possibly the best live album he has ever heard
What may well be the best live record to come from the Rolling Stones has just been released almost a dozen years after it was recorded. “GRRR LIVE!” is available in multiple audio and video formats. - ContributedIn 2012, the Rolling Stones embarked on a massive 30-show tour to mark the band’s 50th anniversary. The final four U.S. shows on that tour were presented at New Jersey’s Prudential Center, where the Dec.
Jagger, Richards and company were at the absolute top of their game for this show, and it does the heart good to hear Charlie Watts on drums one more time. Watts died in August of 2021 after a long battle with cancer.Because this tour was such a milestone event, the Stones pulled out all the stops, delivering what was essentially the best of the best in terms of the material they chose.
For their version of the Freddie King classic “Going Down,” they were joined by John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr., who added some wicked guitar stuff. There’s also a smattering of dialogue in which Jagger tells the audience they’re the reason the band still goes out on tour. The Rolling Stones are the only artists to top the U.K. Album Charts in six different decades and are tied for the second most No. 1 albums on the Official U.K. Chart, surpassed only by the Beatles. The tracks on “GRRR LIVE!” have been remixed and re-edited, and the sound is just terrific. With a good set of headphones it’s like being in the room that night.
