Ontario is trying to short-circuit fast-growing demand for power but critics say it falls short of the conservation programs the government cut.
Ontario is trying to short-circuit fast-growing demand for power — and prevent brownouts — by providing $342 million in incentives for homeowners and businesses to conserve electricity starting next spring.
Smith said Tuesday the incentives include a broader “demand response program” to help homeowners with existing central air conditioning systems or heat pumps and smart thermostats to save money on their bills. The program would allow local electricity suppliers to cycle a homeowner’s air conditioning unit on and off, taking pressure off the power grid in periods of high demand.
Interim NDP Leader Peter Tabuns, the party’s longtime energy critic, said the program falls short of replacing conservation programs Ford’s government “recklessly cut … putting our energy system on a path towards a shortage.” The previous cuts included consumer rebates for electric vehicles and a program that helped homeowners get smart thermostats, energy-efficient windows and home retrofits to reduce their hydro bills.
