The Department of Transportation (DOTr) aims to finalize consultations on the proposed fare increase for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 ( LRT-1 ) by the second quarter of the year. DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista stated in a television interview with state-run PTV that the DOTr-Rail Regulatory Unit (RRU) has commenced hearings on the Light Rail Manila Corp.'s ( LRMC ) petition to raise fares by approximately P2. The RRU will submit a recommendation to the DOTr for approval or rejection.

Bautista anticipates that any fare increase would take effect in the second quarter, or around April at the earliest. Bautista attributed the delays in processing LRMC's previous fare hike petitions since 2018 to the pandemic. He emphasized that the government must respect the concession agreement, which mandates fare increases to reflect the rising operational costs. Since the LRT-1 underwent several enhancements and opened five new stations under its Cavite Extension, its daily ridership has surged to 460,000 as of last month
