In Japan, doomsday prepping is growing in popularity as concerns about natural disasters and missile attacks grow.

It may be the home of Zen, but Japan is one of the most natural disaster-prone places on the planet.

Parents such as Hiroko are taking extreme measures to protect their families. She installed a shelter into her living room which she hopes will protect her and her young daughter in the case of an emergency.Credit:“In the event of an earthquake, this is made of aircraft material, so it’s very strong. Even if the house is crushed, this survives,” Hiroko told SBS Dateline.A shelter like Hiroko’s will set you back about $15,000, with more luxury models priced at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Tōhoku earthquake - which registered 9 on the Richter scale - and tsunami eradicated entire towns and villages.
