PETALING JAYA: Defending champion Lee Zii Jia can take comfort with the kind words that came from the rival camp’s coach and former international Wong Tat Meng after a disastrous first round exit in the Asian Championships.

Tat Meng’s player Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong had put a dent to Zii Jia’s resurgence after upstaging the world No. 4 with a stunning 21-19, 21-16 win on Wednesday in Dubai.

It was a noble gesture by Tat Meng, especially after having the company of Zii Jia for two weeks during a joint training session in Hong Kong with Angus and others in the national team in Hong Kong. Lee Cheuk Yiu also kept Hong Kong’s flag flying high after having beaten another Malaysian Ng Tze Yong in the first round. Yesterday, Cheuk Yiu went on to reach the quarter-finals after shocking world No. 10 Shi Yuqi of China 21-18, 21-18 in the second round.

He however, hopes that Cheuk Yiu and Angus will survive and get the opportunity for medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
