For years, Hobart's showground has been a refuge for people like Tereasa, struggling to get a roof over their heads. She is about to be thrown into a rental market, which is tight and getting tighter.
Hobart woman Tereasa Clements and her partner have lived at the showground for a year but have to move on by the end of the month.abc.net.au/news/hobart-showground-refuge-for-rental-crisis-homeless-set-to-close/101840984For over a year now, Tereasa Clements has been living in a caravan at the Hobart Showground.Skilled migrants are invited to come to the state, but struggle to find somewhere to live"I got made redundant in Launceston and moved down here with my partner," she said.
Living in their van has not been a huge problem for Ms Clements and her partner. He works nearby, and the couple has seen it as preferable to "going into debt to rent". While rents across the country went up more than 10 per cent in 2022, nationally, growth seems to be tapering off — up 2 per cent in the final quarter of the year, compared with 2.3 per cent in the September quarter.
CoreLogic attributes this to a surge in overseas migration to the state, after a couple of years of COVID-induced border restrictions. Aimen Jafri says it is not uncommon for multiple families to be forced to share a house because of the rental shortage.
