The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public about Holiday Heart Syndrome (HHS), a condition where healthy individuals experience irregular heart rhythms (atrial fibrillation) after excessive alcohol consumption during the holidays. The DOH is also closely monitoring acute complications of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like stroke, acute coronary syndrome , and bronchial asthma .
According to the DOH's latest report, 300 NCDs were recorded during the holiday celebrations, including 146 stroke cases, 74 acute coronary syndrome cases, and 80 bronchial asthma cases from December 22, 2024 to January 2, 2025. Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa urged the public to stay disciplined, avoid stress, and adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent NCDs. The DOH recommended regular exercise and a diet low in fat and salt, suggesting the 'Go, Grow, and Glow' food guide. 'Go' foods provide energy (rice, bread, noodles, pasta, corn, sweet potato, cassava, and potato). 'Grow' foods build and repair body tissues (meat, poultry, fish, dairy, beans, nuts, and eggs). 'Glow' foods help regulate body processes with vitamins and minerals (fruits and vegetables). The DOH also emphasized the importance of water for regulating body processes
