The Department of Health (DOH) reported a surge in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart attacks and strokes following the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa attributed the rise to unhealthy lifestyle choices during the holidays.
amid the multiple Christmas and New Year parties held over the past weeks, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Thursday, January 2, 2025, that a total of 300 cases of aggravated non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have been reported across the country. In a press conference, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said they were able to record 146 acute stroke, 74 acute coronary syndrome, and 80 bronchial asthma from eight sentinel hospitals from December 21, 2024 until January 2, 2025.
'While firecracker-related injuries may be going down, the cases of heart attack and stroke are on the rise,' said Herbosa. 'True enough, we saw this (phenomenon) with this monitoring, which we are doing for the first time,' he added. Among stroke patients, the DOH said two patients died during the holiday season, while most cases involve those 45 to 64 years old. There was one patient who died due to acute coronary syndrome, more known as heart attack, which has been recorded as the most common among 55 to 74 years old. The DOH also noted that kids zero to nine years old had the most number of asthma attacks, especially during the New Year revelry. Herbosa said this is the reason why they are strongly pushing for a change in lifestyle among the public, especially during the holiday season. 'Start the year right and make better choices for health with healthy eating, exercise, and self discipline so that you can prevent these so-called lifestyle diseases,' said the health chief. 'We can only change or prevent lifestyle diseases if we take our New Year's resolutions seriously by doing exercises, getting fit, and reducing unhealthy food intake,' added Herbosa.
