THE Department of Health on Friday, December 27, 2024, reported a surge in acute complications of non-communicable diseases as Filipinos celebrate the Christmas season with parties and reunions. In a televised public briefing, DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo reported that 158 NCDs were recorded in eight pilot sites, where the health department started recording cases of stroke, heart attack, and asthma during the holiday season.
'These are the three acute complications of non-communicable diseases that we shall be closely monitoring,' he added. He said most of the cases were recorded prior to Christmas Eve when families celebrated their Noche Buena. 'Cases of stroke and heart attack increased towards Christmas Eve, and went down afterwards,' said Domingo. With Media Noche forthcoming on New Year's Eve, the health official said they are expecting another surge in NCD cases.
