The Department of Energy (DOE) announced the third round of the Green Energy Auction Program (GEA-3), scheduled for February 11, 2025. This round will focus on 4,650 megawatts of capacity, excluding run-of-river (ROR) hydro technology. The auction will cover installation capacities for impounding hydro, geothermal, and pumped storage hydro ( PSH ) from 2025 to 2035. PSH has the largest target with 4,250 MW divided into three lots, spanning Luzon and Visayas grids.
Impounding hydro aims for 300 MW by 2028-2030, while geothermal targets 100 MW from 2025 to 2027. The DOE excluded ROR hydro from GEA-3 due to the existing feed-in-tariff (FIT) system, which remains undersubscribed. The DOE plans to issue the notice of award between May 20 and 21, 2025, and the certificate of award from June 6, 2025, to July 4, 2025. The DOE believes GEA-3 will contribute to a cleaner energy mix, grid stability, and a more sustainable future
